Alon AbramsonEnvironmental Engineering has reached a level of critical importance as a tool for managing the complexities of the environment. Our global society is plagued by a set of uncertainties stemming from the natural world. These issues, at their basic level, relate to the quality of our air, water and land: the elements needed to sustain life. What our world needs is individuals with an understanding of how the environment responds to our activities so that we, as a race, can forge ahead into the future without compromising the basic elements that support us.

Through my education and experience, I am positioned to perform great work in the fields of environmental remediation - to correct for the mistakes of our past - and environmental planning - so that our mistakes are not repeated. My background in Civil Engineering has also given me a rich understanding of surface and subsurface hydrology, soils and geotechnical engineering, and mechanical systems. My approach to a project is both site-specific as well as considerate of larger-scale impacts. I have experience working directly with clients in the non-profit, municipal, commercial and industrial sectors. Therefore, I am familiar with cost, time, regulatory and public relations constraints on projects.

Below, you will find my curriculum vitae (CV), which elaborates on items listed in my résumé and also focuses on recent initiatives and accomplishments that are relevant to you, my potential employer.

RECENT INITIATIVES

Real Food Farms, Baltimore, MD

Project Engineer  December 2010 - Present

Real Food Farms is a non-profit located within the City of Baltimore, MD. The farm seeks to be a model for the viability for urban farming as a sustainable business option for the city that has lost much of its economic base. Real Food Farms will utilize organic practices and conscientious land management practices, while adapting green technological solutions to solving stormwater management and energy issues on the site. My role in this project is to

  • Provide engineering services for non-profit client.
  • Establish client contact and attended planning meetings with design team.
  • Produce Baltimore County code analysis for planning use.
  • Design stormwater management rain garden features.
  • Produce cost estimates for innovative design solutions.
  • Coordinated municipal water connection for irrigation at site.

PHILLY FOOD FORESTS

  • Designed and built a 300 gallon cistern as a model that can be duplicated.
  • Tested soil infiltration capacity and designed rain garden for site runoff.

Fair Food Farmstand, Philadelphia, PA

Volunteer  August 2010 - Present

The Far Food Farmstand is a year-round marketplace for local food, which promotes local growers and sustainable agricultural practices. The stand supports Fair Food's other initiatives such as bringing local food to institutions (e.g. schools, hospitals) within the city.

As a volunteer, I contribute my time several days a week to defer overhead costs for the operation of the stand. The position allows me to engage with local consumers and gives me the opportunity to spread my knowledge of sustainable agricultural practices. I have also been able to get insight into the successful management operation of this retail establishment.

Home Renovation, Philadelphia, PA

Contractor and Advisor September 2010 - Present

While searching for engineering employment, I have been helping with the renovation of a property in Philadelphia. The structure is constructed of masonry with steel beams reinforcing the front section. Due to years of neglect, the building faced two options: razing or complete renovation. The property owner and I safely gutted the structure and removed the roof.

With a licensed architect's design, we then rebuild the roof. The roof work required us to troubleshoot in real-time. We each needed to learn the basics of masonry and steel work, including preparation of concrete and mortar, brick laying, constructing forms, and cutting and welding steel. Construction of the rest of the structure is on-going.

West Philly Runners, Philadelphia, PA

Group Founder  November 2010 - Present

When I moved to West Philadelphia, I discovered a place that encouraged community collaboration and interaction. It felt like a small town more than a city. This was the inspiration for starting the West Philly Runners. The group is founded on the principle that we can strengthen our community by running through it together.

I have utilized several medium in order to promote the group:

Cycling Across America, United States

Role: Trip Organizer, April 2010 - June 2010

I have dreamed of cycling across the United States ever since I heard the first mention of the idea. In the Spring of 2010 I undertook it; the challenge of a lifetime. I informed Golder Associates, my employer at the time, about my plans. Their immense support for the undertaking inspired me to create a fundraising aspect to the trip. I would direct my route to visit as many Golder offices nationwide as possible. I would use the opportunity to talk about and promote the Golder Trust for Orphans Golder's corporate charity.
